Peter, the
fisherman-disciple, embarked on a lifetime journey with Jesus Christ. We can do the same.
Their
small fishing boat was being battered about in the stormy Sea of
Galilee. Suddenly, out of the darkness emerged a shadowy figure.
Incredibly, the phantom
seemed to be — yes, it was — walking on the water toward them.
The life
of Peter, Jesus’ friend and leading disciple, is a lesson for all
who are
discouraged. He struggled with the same despair but, through the
faithfulness of our Lord, he found acceptance and forgiveness.
Peter was a man
of
contradictions—impulsive and bold, yet affectionate and loyal. He
responded
eagerly to Jesus’ call (Matthew 4:18). He left his net, his boat, his
fishing
trade and his familiar surroundings. He was also the first of the
disciples to
recognize who Jesus was (Matthew 16:16).
