The Favor of the King

Like many Americans, I enjoy keeping up with the British royals. The birth of the newest prince in July was exciting, not only because of the happiness of the young parents, but also because of all the history behind that little boy.

Lopsided Grace

It’s been said there are only about seven stories in the whole world, and the storyline of every book or movie is simply a variation of one of them. The most common storyline is the battle between good and evil and usually features a savior figure.

Grace to Be Who You Are

I enjoy riding a bicycle for exercise and try to ride almost every day. One day this past summer, believe it or not, it rained—in the summer, in California! It wasn’t really rain, but there was enough moisture I decided not to ride. I don’t have rain gear and didn’t want to get wet. Not that I’m afraid I’ll melt — I just don’t like going out in the elements without the proper clothing. So, not wanting to miss a workout, I pulled out an old exercise DVD.

Oh Come, All Ye Wasteful

No kidding—I really did see “Oh Come, All Ye Wasteful” on a store window! The message is no longer subtle or unstated—‘tis the season to be greedy. Retailers begin their advertising barrage earlier every year, inundating us with catalogs, commercials and email offers. More and more people buy gifts for themselves while shopping for others. All that matters, it seems, is that we buy as much as possible, whether we need it or not. I want to shut it all out, but it’s everywhere. I can’t escape.

Popcorn and God

I love the salt, butter and crunch of hot, fresh popcorn. It’s my snack of choice in the evening, even over dessert. We had popcorn a lot as I grew up, so part of my fondness for it probably has to do with childhood memories.

The Right Place at the Right Time

At a meeting on how to attract more customers in our direct-selling business, one woman shared her strategy: to be in the right place at the right time. I thought, yes, but that is easier said than done. I’ve been in the right place a few times, like when I was walking along the beach in Australia and just happened to fall in with a group of people who had spotted some whales. A few days before I saw a kookaburra, which my Australian friends told me was a rare sight.
